LAMBS IN DEMAND p.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12.
The store sheep entry at Addington today was 5083, including 2209 lambs, 1995 ewes and 879 wethers. Lambs met a good sale at prices Is to 2s higher than last week, the top price being 36s 8d for a good pen of Romney cross ewe lambs. A line of 104 halfbreds made 31s. The ewe demand was restricted except for best. A good lot of Romney two-tooths running with English Leicester rams made 465, and an excellent lot of five-year Corriedales out with Southdown rams sold at 34s 7d. Aged ewes with good mouths made 27s to 34s 7d. Best wethers made 32s 9d to 37s 4d. The fat lamb entry was 1580. The quality was good and butchers' lambs, which were in short supply, sold well. Others maintained schedule rates. Values:—
Extra prime fat lambs made to 60s 7d; prime, 43s to 48s; good, 37s to 425; medium, 30s to 365; light, 25s to 295. The fat sheep entry was 4000, the quality being high and the yarding too short for trade requirements. Values appreciated sharply for wethers by. 4s, while butchers’ ewes maintained late rates, but lighter sorts were hard to sell. Values:— Extra prime heavy wethers made to 62s 7d; prime heavy, 50s to 545; prime medium-weight, 45s to 495; ordinary and light, 40s to 445; prime heavy ewes, to 41s 7d; prime, 29s to 325; medium, 25s to 28s; ordinary and light. 19s to 245. A short fat cattle entry of 355 included many old and plain cows and unfinished steers. The demand for a limited supply of choice beef was steady at prices up to £1 better, while plainer beef was firmer by up to 10s a head. Values:— Extra prime heavy steers made to £26 2s 6d; prime heavy, £2O to £32; prime medium-weight, £ls 10s to £l9 10s; ordinary and light, £l3 10s to £ls; extra prime heifers, to £2l 17s 6d; prime, £ll to £ls; ordinary and light, £8 to £10; extra prime cows, to £i6 7s 6d; prime, £9 10s to £l2; ordinary and light, £7 to £9. '
The porker yarding was much larger but many plain and unfinished sorts were included. All prime pigs met a good sale, with values 3s to 4s better. The chopper yarding was one of the largest this season, and totalled about 60 head. The sale was good, but values eased by £1 to £1 10s. Baconers were yarded in larger numbers, but the sale was good. Light and unfinished porkers made 59s 6d to £3 9s 6d; medium porkers, £3 19s 6d to £4 2s 6d; heavy porkers, £4 14s 6d to £5 5s 6d; choppers, £5 8s 6d to £l2 18s 6d; light baconers, £5 9s 6d to £5 19s 6d; medium baconers, £6 Is 6d to £6 7s 6d; heavy baconers, £6 12s 6d to £6 19s 6d; extra heavy baconers, £7 Is 6d to £7 7s 6d.
