MEN’S MATCHES

Hockey

COMPETITION OPENS

EIGHT TEAMS PLAYING Eight teams participated in the first games of the Otago Hockey Association's 1948 season on Saturday. Three grounds were used, the grass being rather slippery. Results of the games were:— Albany 1, High School Old Boys 1. University A 4, Technical Old Boys 3. Training College 2, University B 1. Wesley 2, Collegiate 2. ALBANY v. OLD BOYS At half time in the game between Albany and High School Old Boys, played at Tonga Park, Albany—which went through last season without a loss—was in the lead by one goal. H. Crooks was the scorer. Not much separated the teams, however. Old Boys in the second spell put plenty of sting into their work and one attacking movement resulted in D. St. John; the inside left, scoring. The game ended; Albany 1, Old Boys 1. The referees were Messrs W. Scott and A. Chapman. Teams:—Albany: W. M. Carr, B. Bedford, Kofoed, N. McDowell, R. McKinley, A. Jack, D. Stewart, H. Crooks, J. Robertson, N. Mong, B. Graham. High School Old Boys: A. Jones, W. Thompson, T. Morgan, L. Gurr, A. F. Davidson, J. Porter, R. Ritchie, D. St. John, G. Wright, V. McArley, D. Campbell. COLLEGE v. UNIVERSITY B Against a Training College side which, until the second half, did not impress like teams of the past, University B appeared as a fast, although not fully cooperative, combination. At half time the score was 1-all, goals having been scored by G. K. McKenzie for University and D. Wiffin for College. Considerable improvement was shown by College in the second spell and the halves and forwards combined well. D. Fraser scored College’s winning goal: The referees were Messrs H. W. Tyrrell and C. Grey. Teams.—University B: L. T. Williams, B. C. Tuson, W. Cropp, N. Watson, T. Shearer, W. R. Sparrow, H. K. Ibbertson. G. K. McKenzie, G. J. Peters, E. Shelton, K. C. McKenzie. Training College: J. W. Currie, J. Domigan, D. E. Whittaker, R. Welsh, M. Hillstead, R. Sinclair, D Fraser, D. Wiffin. W. Leslie, J. Sparrow, A. Donaldson. UNIVERSITY A v. TECHNICAL University A, showing better control of the ball, defeated Technical College Old Boys by 4 goals to 3 at the Oval. In the actual territorial aspect there was little between the teams, and Technical played a rugged, determined game. The half-time score was I—all. Scorers for University were D. Sturman (3) and J. Anderson, while B. Andreassand (2) and W. Freeman goaled for Technical. The teams were: University—S. Faine, P. Ayon, G. Jackson, P. Duggan, E. French, R. Smith (captain), P. Lindsay, D, Sturman, G. West, J. Anderson, A. Gdulding; Technical Old Boys—S. Robinson, C. Chernside, W. Leathley, R. Bond, S. Dobier, L. Edwards, B. Crossland, W. Freeman, N. Mason, B. Andressand, S. Swanson. WESLEY v. COLLEGIATE At Logan Park Wesley and Collegiate, the High School Old Boys’ second string this year, played to a draw. 2 goals each. Both sides started plenty of scoring moves, but faulty play frequently made the attacks collapse. W. Martin and S. Swift scored for Collegiate, and R. Thompson and D. Hodges for Wesley. Teams: Wesley—B. Irving, B. Smithson, D. Booth, L. Couch, N. Hickman, K. Hellyer, R. Thompson. D. Scoley, K. Thomson. J. Martin and D. Hodges; Collegiate—J. Main, G. Shaw, H. Salter, HillScully, D. Lockhart, K. Mowbray, F. Hay, W. Martin, S. Swift, H. Johnson, T. Timpany.
