OLYMPIC ATHLETES
AUSTRALIAN TEAM ENLARGED EXTRA FINANCES RAISED Rec. 9 p.m. MELBOURNE, Apl. 18. An Australian party of 74, comprising 67 competitors and seven managers, has been chosen by the Australian Olympic Federation to attend the London Games. The party far exceeds that which the federation originally thought it could finance. A water polo team of 10 has been included providing that sufficient return berths are available. Extra athletes in the running for Olympic selection will make the trip subject to the same proviso. A surprise selection is that of Peter Gardner, the Victorian hurdler, who failed to reproduce his best performance of 14.6 sec for the 120 Yards Hurdles during the tests. A big problem faced by the executive last night was whether it would add athletes who gained finance for themselves for individual events or would include a water polo team. The result has been a compromise, but swimming officials are determined that berths for the polo players will be procured.
