BACKERS WITHDRAWN

“MacARTHUR FOR PRESIDENT” CAMPAIGN CANDIDATE’S HEAVY DEFEAT WASHINGTON, Apl. 16. Backers of the movement to nominate General MacArthur as the Republican Presidential candidate announced to-day that the official “ MacArthur for President ” organisation would not submit General MacArthur's name in any more Republican primary elections. General MacArthur was badly beaten by Mr Harold Stassen in the primaries in Nebraska, and even in his home State, Wisconsin. Although to-day’s announcement does not technically withdraw General MacArthur from tjie Presidential race —his name could still be presented to the Republican convention in June if the first ballot does not decide the candidate —it is now taken for granted that the move to nominate General MacArthur for President is over.
