CRIMINAL JUSTICE BILL

THIRD READING IN HOUSE OF COMMONS LONDON, Apl. 16. The Criminal Justice Bill was read a third time in the House of Commons to-day without a division. The Home Secretary, Mr Chuter Ede, in moving the third reading, announced that in view of the House's vote on Wednesday to abolish the death penalty and the prospect of the Criminal Justice Bill, thus amended, becoming law during the present session of Parliament, death sentences during the interim period would be commuted to penal servitude for life. Two men, including James Camb, are at present under sentence of death. Camb’s solicitor said to-day: “We are going ahead with an appeal in spite of Mr Chuter Ede.’s statement. The appeal is against Camb's conviction.”
