A humorous incident during the derings of a marine en g i^L was ci r to the .Palmerston North Citizens 1 uncheon Club. The story concerned the speaker himself, Mr E. Blechynden, and six small Chinese boys, who were part of the cargo of a boat lying beside an anchored ship in a Chinese port. Mr Blechynden, leaning over the ships rail, recognised the boys as being -for sale. They looked very hungry, so he handed five dollars to the man who seemed to be in charge and told him to buy them some food and feed his charges. There must have been some misunderstanding, because when the ship was well out to sea Mr Blechynden found the six boys in his cabin, apparently his property. It finally cost him 600 dollars to place them in a convent in Hongkong.
