SCHOOLBOY SOCCER
Sir,—ln a report in the Daily Times concern is expressed by members of the New Zealand Football Association about the lack of encouragement which Soccer receives in secondary schools. I would just like to point out that the association will not allow school players to play in other clubs. Some of these players would like to play for their school but would not want to leave off Saturday matches. As school matches are played on Fridays why cannot the players play for clubs on Saturday?—l am, etc., Schoolboy.
IWhen this letter was referred to the secretary of the Otago Football Association, Mr R. Mabon, he explained that the schools would not permit the boys to play Rugby or Soccer fo;- outside clubs, and he understood the same position applied in respect to hockey. In addition to fielding teams in the Friday competitions, however, the Otago Boys’ High School and King’s High School fielded their own soccer elevens in the Fourth and Fifth Grade competitions on Saturdays.—Ed O.D.T.]
