COUNTY COUNCIL The meeting of the Maniototo County Council was attended by Crs J. McK. Morgan (chairman). C. J. Altchison, L. A. Bleach, T. R. Menlove, G. G. Scott, E. G. Williamson, L. L. Smith, A. Kane, and J. B. McGill. The chairman referred to the deaths of Mr D. McConnell, of Oturehua, Valerie Harvey aged-7, of Orangapal, Mr A. J. M. Campbell, of Kyeburn, and Mrs Ledingham, of " roa. Members passed a vote of sympathy W Cr Bleach’s motion that the five-chain section of the Waipiata-Naseby road be improved at an estimated cost of *.t>s W^ie ar town clerk, Balclutha Borough Council, wrote requesting support for the completion of the Tuapeka-Beaumont road. It was agreed to support the claim. A letter was read from the Acting Minister of Works to the effect that the programme of construction work on the Maniototo irrigation scheme had not yet been completed but It could be stated definitely that there would be no flooding of the roads in the storage basin within the next five years. The secretary, New Zealand Counties Association, replied to the council’s request that the minimum width of swing gates be reviewed and stated that his executive was asking the Minister that counties be empowered by special order to require a minimum width of 12 feet. A joint letter from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in connection with the United Nations appeal for children was received. It was decided to place a light outside the • Waipiata Library, and that one mile of patch gravelling be done on the Styx Riding roads in April. MANIOTOTO R.S.A. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Maniototo R.S.A., held in Ranfurly recently. Dr J. Costello, who presided, referred to the success of the appeal for food parcels and also to the progress being made with the plans for the War Memorial. Arrangements were completed for the holding of the Anzac service at Patearoa and also for holding the annual reunion at Ranfurly on May 15. The election of office-bearers resulted:—President, Mr K. Paterson; vice-presidents, Mr A. Kerr (senior). Mr J. Macassey (junior); secretary. Mr E. L. Briggs; assistant secretary, Mr J. Dixon; treasurer, Mr G. Ferens; auditor, Mr J. Lynch.
