CHARTERED SECRETARIES

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING The first annual general meeting of members of the Otago and Southland Division of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries was held in Dunedin on Monday. Mr G. E. T. Dorman, Chartered secretary and public accountant, of Invercargill, addressed members on his impressions of the jubilee convention of the Australasian Institute of Accountants. Mr Dorman dealt with the seven papers presented at the convention and commended to the New Zealand bodies the method of presentation adopted in Australia—to circulate to all members attending the convention, seven days prior to the paper being presented, a full copy of the text of the paper. A much more informed and more critical discussion was thus able to be held.

Depreciation and the several accounting methods in use to deal with this complex subject were covered by three separate papers at the convention. A further paper discussed by Mr Dorman was that presented at the convention by Mr W. M. Scott, chairman of the Victorian Taxation Study Group whose subject was Accounting for Stock in Trade. This subject will provide a wide field for further research and intensive study by chartered secretaries in both local and government body positions and in private industries.
