“WATER-BUS” SERVICE
REVIVAL ON THE THAMES FASTER THAN BUS JOURNEY N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent
Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Feb. 27. * A regular businessman’s “ waterbus” service on the Thames through the central area of London, something which was commonplace 100 years ago but which has died out with the spread of train, tube and bus systems, will be revived in June, when a veteran Thames waterman, Richard O'Dell, whose family have operated small craft on the river for three generations, will commence a regular half-hourly service between Putney and the Tower Bridge. The service will be both ways with four powerful Diesel-en-gined launches, each capable of a speed of 10& knots, and with accommodation for 160 passengers. There will be intermediate stops at Chelsea, Lambeth and Charing Cross, and the fares will be on the same scale as those for bus routes of comparable length. Trial trips have already shown that the launches can cover the distance between Putney and the Tower Bridge in half the time occupied by the journey between these two points, and in only -10 minutes less than the jour nev at present takes by tube. , The Ministry of Transport has given the scheme its blessing in the hope tha? it will relieve pressure on the bus and tube services.
