ANTARCTIC DISPUTE

ARGENTINIAN CLAIMS RENEWED BUENOS aikes, Rec. 10 p.m. Feb. 26. Argentina to-day renewed the word, battle with Britain over the Falklands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas. The Foreign Office issued a communique which is in the nature of a reply to Mr Ernest Bevin’s speech in the House of Commons yesterday. The communique insisted that the Falklands were, and always have been, Argentinian, and that Britain took them by force. This was not to say that Argentina did not “ trust in the possibility ” that Britain might return them in a gesture of good faith founded on traditional British respect for international law. The communique added that a British reply was awaited to the Argentine suggestion for an international conference on Antarctic territories only. This was the only point to consider since the Falklands were Argentinian without the need of discussions or conferences. The Foreign Minister, Senor Bramuglia, also said that it was absurd to believe that Argentina would give bases for the Falklands as had been suggested.
