BREAD DELIVERY
Attitude of Oamaru Grocers
As from Monday, March 8, customers within the Borough of Oamaru will not be able to purchase their bread from a grocer, but will have their supplies delivered by a baker under a zoning scheme which is in the process of being drawn up. With the exception of certain grocers in Oamaru who are not members of the North Otago Master Grocers’ Association, no bread will be handled by a grocer at all. t
One of the factors is stated to be the difficulty which grocers are experiencing in procuring paper for bread wrapping, and another is the small margin of profit involved in the selling of bread. This decision has been reached by the North Otago Master Grocers’ Association, and the responsibility of evolving a workable zoning scheme will rest with the Master Bakers’ Association. At present bakers deliver bread to the grocer and not direct to the customer. When the Master Grocers’ decision cflmes into effect it will mean that customers will have no option about the manner in which they buy their bread—unless some grocers are loth to fall in with the scheme and insist on keeping to the practice of selling bread across the counter to their customers. These arrangements apply only to the borough.
