CRICKET NOTES

Representative Matches

Only moderate success has been enjoyed by North Otago Senior and Junior elevens in representative matches played so far this season. Last Saturday two Senior teams gained first innings wins over South Canterbury and the Waihemo Sub-association, and the Junior team won its game against South Canterbury on the first innings. Up to last Saturday two representative matches in the Senior Grade had been played, Southland gaining an outright win in the first, and Canterbury Colts gaining a first innings win in the second. The Seniors now had two wins and two losses.

The Junior representative team has been more successful and has had two wins •and a loss. They beat the Waitaki Subassociation and South Canterbury, but lost to the Waitaki Sub-association in a return game. Last Saturday’s Matches

To make 186 runs in 90 minutes in a Senior representative match is by no means an easy task, but the North Otago Senior eleven which played South Canterbury at Timaru last Saturday 'accomplished this for the loss of five wickets and won the game. South Canterbury batted first and at 3.55 p.m. declared at 165 for seven wickets. E. Earwaker, who was the outstanding South Canterbury batsman, made 61 not out, including four 6’s and four 4’s. R. Bowden made 27 (run out) and J. Lang 26 not out (including six 4’s). For North Otago, J. Maddigan took four wickets for 39 runs in 15 overs, six of which were maidens. North Otago had just on two hours to compile the necessary runs to gain a first innings win, but they passed South Canterbury’s score in 90 minutes. I. H. Burrows was dismissed cheaply, but a partnership between A. Forbes and J. Watson was most helpful. Forbes was dismissed at 50, after hitting nine boundaries, including two 6’s. J. Watson deserves credit for his innings of 89 net out. He batted steadily and hit 15 4’s and one 6. K. Doig also gave a polished performance to make 28. A close finish was seen in the North Otago v. Waihemo Sub-association game, played at Oamaru, North Otago opened the batting and made 193. Waihemo replied with 179 runs, the last batsman being dismissed at 5.55 p.m.—five minutes before stumps. North Otago’s first six wickets fell for 62 runs, but a seventhwicket partnership between J. Spear and M. Dick added a further 106 runs to the total. J. Spear made 35, mostly in singles and 2’s. M. Dick’s score of 82 saved the day for North Otago, his innings including seven 4’s and a 6. R. Carlton (20) and H. Kelk (13) were the only other North Otago batsmen to reach double figures. Allan and Kerr, the opening batsmen for Waihemo, contributed 48 runs before Kerr was caught for 25. Allan made 47 before he was bowled by Zimmermann. The next three batsmen were dismissed cheaply, but Vinicombe, Aspinall, Mackie, and McLelland contributed 29, 30, 15, and 20 respectively, McLelland being not out. The remaining two batsmen failed to score. Bowling for North Otago, D. Hall took four wickets for 27 runs and Zimmermann four for 43. A first-innings win by 26 runs was secured by North Otago juniors against South Canterbury at Timaru last Saturday. Fitzgerald (27), Riley (26), and Cook (23) contributed mainly to South Canterbury’s first strike of 121 runs, and Parker took four wickets for 15 runs for North Otago. North Otago replied with 147 runs, I. Geddes making 33, J. O’Brien 32, and P. Moir 24. For South Canterbury, Riley took three wickets for 14 runs and Fitzgerald took three for 25. South Canterbury declared with 88 for five wickets in the second innings, Fitzgerald making 24 and Riley 23. At stumps North Otago had 55 on the board for six wickets in their second strike, Parker contributing 21. For South Canterbury, Fitzgerald took three wickets for 8 runs and Howard took two for 10. Competition points in the senior competition to date are: Union 30, Oamaru A 22, Oamaru B and Waitaki 19 each, Albion and Kurow 9 each. The draw for Saturday is:— Seniors.—Oamaru B v.' Waitaki, at Waitaki; Union v. Kurow, at Waitaki; Albion v. Oamaru A. at Waitaki. Juniors.—Albion v. Oamaru, at Waitaki; Railway v. Union No. 1, King George’s Park; Union No. 2, a bye.
