Tough Horse St. Julian, who trotted a mile in 2min llsec in 1880, was one of the toughest horses ever bred in America. Owing to his unruly habits and bad temper, his trainer, Orrin Hickok, who had nearly despaired of getting him ready to trot solidly, decided to work him into submission. So severe was the programme mapped out for this speedy but wayward trotter, says an American writer, that he was reputed to have worked a total of 54 miles in one day, made up of a jog of 17 miles, a two-mile heat in smin 40sec, a tvalk, and another two-mile heat a little faster. After another walk, two more two-mile runs in smin 15sec, and a mile in 2min 30sec were his tasks. The work went on with six or more miles ranging from 2min 40sec to 2min 30sec, finishing the day with a rousing work-out over a mile.
