EFFORTS TO OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES
Questions were fired at Sir Stafford Cripps for nearly an hour after he made his statement about the £675,000,000 deficit in Britain's balance of payments. Here are some of tliem and his answers: Are you confident that there will be no substantial diminution in Britain’s standard of living in the next 12 months?—Certainly not. Do you think a big increase of production is possible without the re-equipment and mechanisation of industry?—Yes. Much could be done by more efficient management and the best use of existing machinery and man-power. Would you say it was fair to ask workers to do their best with machinery 50 years old?—I think it fair to ask everybody to do their best when they are fighting for their lives.
W r, <en questioned about his week-end reference to the danger of a totalitarian Government, he replied: “ I had the extreme Right and extreme Left in mind.”
