SERIOUS DELAY

Interisland Shipping

Mr G. T. Gillies, in a Utter to the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce, brought to the notice of the chamber some facts in respect to the serious delay caused by the shipping position in Wellington. Mr Gillies stated that his carrying firm arrived at Lower Hutt at 8 a.m. recently, completed loading by 10 a.m., and left for Wellington, The firm did not leave the wharf until after 9 p.m. With this position, the letter continued, the South Island was working under an impossible handicap. . Two days later when another shipment was ready to load, word was received that there was a “ stop work ” meeting. The South Island must get together and break down this system of strangulation, Mr Gillies added. It was decided to forward copies of the letter to the South Island Local Bodies’ Association and the Invercargill, Dunedin, and Christchurch Chambers of Commerce.
