Monthly Meeting of Chamber
Mr W. R. Williams was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru Chamber of Commerce on Monday night. The North Otago Lawn Tennis Association advised that an exhibition match between the visiting Australian touring team and New Zealanders would be played at the Gardens on Thursday next, and requested the chamber to recommend that shops close for one or two hours to enable employees to see the game.—lt was recommended that the matter be left foi the employee and employer to arrange. Mr Williams reported on meetings of the Immigration Welfare Committee. He said until accommodation was found few-, if any, immigrants could be allocated to Oamaru, and he made an appeal to all to assist in the finding of billets Mr Williams reported that officers of the Oamaru Harbour Board had interviewed him on the matter ?f direct shipping to Oamaru. The board, he said, had been active in trying to obtain direct shipping, and representations had been made to the shipping companies.
