Because of the important part played by bumble bees in the pollination of New Zealand’s red clover crop, Mr R. A. Cumber, of the entomology division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, is making a three months’ study of bees in Britain. Mr Cumber has been released for the investigation by the Imperial College, where he is studying under a rehabilitation bursary. Farmers have been concerned that crops have not been adequately fertilised in recent seasons and it is hoped that Mr Cumber’s study of British varieties of bees will help in arriving at measures which can be taken to increase New Zealand’s bumble bee population.
