OBITUARY
MR MOOR’KAROLY Mr Moor’Karoly, a Hungarian musician well-known in Auckland, died in Dunedin on Thursday. Since coming to New Zealand in 1922 he has devoted his life to church music, and was learned in liturgical music. His most important compositions include the music for Archbishop McKeefry’s consecration service at Auckland, a work that was recorded and is expected to be released soon, and he took a leading part in preparing music for the New Zealand Roman Catholic centennial observances in 1938, and trained the large choir which sang during the festival. He* was conductor of the choir at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Auckland. Mr Moor’Karoly was born in Kecsemlt, Hungary, and studied at the Liszt Academy under Koesseler (a friend of Brahms) and .Arpad Szendy. His contemporaries included Bartok, Kodaly, and Dohnanyi. He had a distinguished career at the academy, and was chosen to play the famous organ solo “ 8.A.C.H.,” a fugue written in memory of Bach at the Liszt memorial service. As a concert artist he played in London, Berlin, and Budapest. He is survived by his wife, a son, Dr Stephen Moor, who is doing postgraduate work in London, and a daughter, Mrs N. L. Edson, of Dunedin.
