ASSAULT CHARGES
CITY POLICE COURT A vigorous plea from the dock resulted in an order being made for the suppression of the name of a young man from Timaru when he appeared in the City Police Court yesterday, before Messrs A. R. Richardson and T. D. Jamieson, justices of the peace, on two charges of assault and one of casting offensive matter. He entered pleas of guilty to the assault charges and not guilty on the other charge. Sergeant A. S. Charles stated that when accosted in Dowling street Recasting offensive matter, the accused had been evasive and had given several improbable addresses. Witness had ordered him to come to the police station but, on the way, he had attempted to escape. In the ensuing pursuit and scuffle the accused had assaulted witness and Constable Taylor. The accused stated that he had foolishly “got the wind up” and imagined that he would lose his job if his name appeared. He was convicted and fined £5 on the first charge of assault, and convicted and discharged on the other charges. An order was made for the suppression of his name. Drunkenness Charges John McDougall Arnell, a labourer, aged 47, pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs (10s) on a charge of having been found drunk in Frederick street. A statutory first offender was similarily charged and fined.
