REGATTA INCIDENT

CHAMPION COLLAPSES PROMPT ACTION BY RESCUER P.A. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. A dramatic incident occurred during the Senior Single Sculls in the New Year regatta at Picton yesterday. The New Zealand champion, Pat Abbott, of Petone, collapsed near Mill Peak, and had it not been for the quick action of T. Hegglun (Wairau), would have slipped into the water, with possibly fatal results. Abbott suffered muscular contraction, which completely immobilised him, but his plight was seen by Hegglun, who was alongside him, and withdrew temporarily from the race to hold on to one of Abbott’s sculls, thus preventing the skiff from overturning. A dinghy was taken out from the shore, and Abbott was removed from the skiff and later transferred to a launch and taken ashore to receive attention. He made a good recovery, but took no further part in the regatta. Hegglun rowed exceptionally well to catch up the others after the delay and finish third.
