Special 'to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2. Globe Direct joined Imperial Grattan in the lead aflfci a furlong in the Mason Handicap, Logan Rey being handy, with most of the field in close order. Imperial Grattan was ir. front at the mile post. Emulous took fourth place starting the last rcund, and half a mile from home ha was with Imperial Grattan just in front of Globe Direct. Then In the Mood moved up. taking the lead three furlongs from home. Imperial Grattan, Emulous and Globe Direct followed him to the straight. The leader tired over the last furlong, but hung on to beat Globe Direct by a head, while a length back Emulous beat Imperial Grattan by a nose. Logan Rey was fifth.
Sure Money, the favourite, joined Bardia in the lead after six furlongs in the Progressive Handicap, but broke two furlongs further on. Buncrana and Suzerain then followed Bardia till two furlongs from the winning post, where Suzerain took the lead, but Heir Apparent finished well to win by a length, Loyal Flier making a late dash for third.
Bonny Scott had an easy win in the Middleton Handicap, after heading Wedding . Ring more than three furlongs from home, while King’s Messenger outstayed Wedding Rihg for second. Flying Scott led practically all the way in the Hornby Handicap, and just staggered home from the most tired lot of horses I ever saw at the finish of a race on a firm track. Limerick Pride retired after leading all the way to the home turn in the Selwyn Handicap. Checkmate, after being fifth most of the way, then took charge and won decisively, while Follow Mo wore Johnnie Lawn down in the straight. Positive led Stirling Castle, Caudray and Monagh.Leagh over a mile in me Prebbleton Handicap. Monagh was in front three furlongs from home and won easily, Right Royal staying on best of the .others. Imperial Grattan led Globe Direct Logan Rey most of the way m the Au Revolt’ sprint. Globe Direct headed the other pair in the straight, but Giattan Drive finished well, and a 1 photograph showed he failed only by ■ a nose, favourite, Maori Home, tangled at the start.
