THE CENTENNIAL SHIELD

Sir, —That the constellations of the sky, apparently so steadfast in figure, actually do change in cosmic time in a manner partly predictable is admitted, but I think the designer of the Centennial Shield must have access to information not yet divulged to the astronomical world, and, moreover, must have had an eye in the multi-millenial instead of the centennial, celebration of Otago. The figure of the Southern Cross in the shield has perhaps as much relation to reality as has the lion in the centre, but then we have been hardened to the lion by convention. The cross is scarcely recognisable as such, and rather reflects on the astronomical sense of the community.—l am, etc., Cross-eye.
