CITY PARKING AREAS

Sir, —After an absence of many years, I have returned to my native city, Dunedin —the Dunedin I have always extolled and praised with, I believe, pardonable pride, as it has advantages and conditions not always enjoyed elsewhere. However, it has one very puzzling set of conditions on which I believe a vast improvement could be made. I refer to the car-parkling regulations. I agree that there is a case for a short period carparking limit in the main street—Princes and George streets—where, with the trams, congestion of the traffic is possible, but this 30-minute and 60-minute parking limit in the side streets of the city appears to be not only unnecessary, but annoying to the business men and visitors who use cars in the city. May I inquire for what section of the community is this carking regulation designed, and for what purpose I would suggest that the majority of car users require parking for at least three or four hours at a time, consequently, if the majority are to be served and the city traffic regulations brought up to date they must be revised, and, with the exception of the main street only, and with parking totally prohibited in certain narrow streets or parts of other streets, an unrestricted time limit for car parking be allowed in all remaining streets. —1 am, etc,, Progress. Dunedin. October 6. *
