BALCLUTHA HOSPITAL

Sir, —Visiting the Balclutha Hospital on a recent •“ Visitors' Night ” I was surprised to find that in the yard in front of the institution no light had been provided by the authorities to pierce the Cimmerian darkness. The result —a milling mass of motor vehicles, some going forward, some backward, with pedestrians hopping about in between. Only by good fortune and the skill of the dri\ers was accident avoided. Why this miserliness, and who is to blame? Comnionsense would suggest that the place be floodlit to some extent, especially when visitors are thronging out of a welllighted building to come into total darkness. It is understood there is a representative of the Transport Department in Balclutha. I wonder if this gentleman has ever visited the hospital'on a visitors’ night. The Transport Department has the power to compel lighting of the yard. Also is it not time the narrow winding road leading to the hospital was replaced by a modern two-way traffic road? These are matters just as urgent as the costly building schemes the Hospital Board seems wedded to.—l am, etc., Visitor.
