SYDNEY SLUM AREAS

ACQUIRED BY GOVERNMENT

FIRST STEP IN HOUSING POLICY

Rec. 9 p.m. SYDNEY. Sept. 5. The first important step under the State Government’s housing policy to acquire and demolish Sydney’s substandard dwellings was made when the Minister of Housing, Mr Clive Evatt, signed resumption notices making the State Government the owner of houses and land in the suburb of Redfern. He said that he was arranging temporary accommodation for people concerned and had called tenders for the erection of 72 modern brick flats in the nearby suburb of Erskineville. A children’s playing area and beautification scheme will be provided.
