GAS PROPULSION

BRITISH NAVAL GUNBOAT Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON. Sept. 3. The Admiralty has announced that the Royal Navy has held trials of the first craft in the world to be propelled by a gas turbine. Th'e 110-feet triplescrew gunboat in which the engine was installed did 40 miles an. hour during the trial. The engine combines the advantage of a smooth-running steam turbine with economy in weight and space. The motion is entirely rotary and obviates vibration and other disadvantages of a steam turbine. A naval officer emphasised that it was not jetpropulsion and would not create records. “ but it produces remarkable power for the weight and space, and may well bring about a revolution in the performance of smaller fighting ships.” he said. The Admiraity is planning larger gas turbines for escori vessels.
