PACKET EXPLODES
POSTAL OFFICIALS INJURED MAIL FROM WAR OFFICE LONDON, Sept. 3. A packet which exploded when dropped into a sorting basket at a Soutn-west London post office this afternoon injured two postmen, who were taken to hospital. The explosion shook windows in neighbouring offices. It was heard over a wide area. The two injured postmen suffered lacerated feet. The packet was collected during the day from a post box, and it was being stamped before sorting when it exploded. The postman said the packet was originally postmarked Eire, and it had been redirected. It is believed the packet was among the mail collected from the War Office during the day. A later message said that the package was 12 inches by 4 by 4. It was marked: “To be handled with great care.” It contained a small compass and an explosive which has not yet been identified. The packet was delivered to the War Office addressed to a senior officer who has since-moved elsewhere. It was redirected and posted and collected. Very ltitle political significance is attached to the explosion. The package bore a sixpenny English stamp.
