VALUABLE MANUSCRIPT

LORD BADEN POWELL’S BOOK DISCOVERED AFTER FORTY YEARS N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 4. The original manuscript of the late Lord Baden Powell's book, “ Scouting for Boys,” on which the world-wide Scout movement has been founded, has come into the possession of Boy Scouts’ Imperial Headquarters after being lost for nearly 40 years. The manuscript was produced by an elderly former clerk in the War Office, who said that in 1907 he was lent to Lord Baden Powell to make a copy of some of his documents. These included the hand-written draft of “ Scouting for Boys.” The clerk said that after making the copy he did not return the original as he did not realise its importance.

“ Scouting for Boys ” was first published in instalments in 1906. and soon afterwards the formation of the first Scout troops, based upon Lord Baden Powell's ideas, was announced.
