FURTHER ORDER PLACED URGENT RENEWAL OF LINES Referring to the placing of an order in Australia for a further 100 tons of drilled tram rtfils, together with the necessary fishplates and sleepers, the report of the Transport Committee of the Citv Council explains that: this order is" additional to the one for 100 tons of rails placed in 1945. -. The report adds that 25 tons of the order placed in 1945 is expected at an early date. The rails are required for " urgent renewals on the city lines." The cost of the latest order is estimated to be £2991 17s 6d, the indicative price quoted by the agents being £2l 15s a ton, but the price will be adjusted to the ruling rate at the time of shipment. An endeavour was recently made by the committee to place an order for rails in Great Britain, but inquiries by the Department of Industries and Commerce “ indicated ” that the British Government was unable to make an allocation of steel rails to New Zealand.
