NO VACANCIES
WATERSIDE UNION MEMBERSHIP VOLUNTARILY INCREASED AN ASSERTION DENIED “Absolutely untrue,” remarked Mr S. B. Macdonald, secretary of the Dunedin Waterside Workers’ Union, when invited to comment yesterday on the statement made in the House of Repre-. sentatives on Wednesday by Mr J. R. Marshall (Oppn., Mt. Victoria) that when 50 vacancies occurred on the Dunedin waterfront only three or four non-unionists were admitted to the union. As soon as vacancies occurred they were filled immediately by the union, Mr Macdonald said. Recently, the
union had voluntarily increased the limit of its membership from 260 to 300. These were all men from the bureau and did not include pensioners or permanent men. “At no stage since we voluntarily increased our membership by 40 has the limit fallen below the 300 mark,” Mr Macdonald said. “When vacancies occur, they are filled immediately with men whose names are on the waiting list. There is no delay.” Mr Macdonald added that he was certain that the employers and everyone else were satisfied with the position in Dunedin. If any dissatisfaction existed, the proper thing to do was to lay a complaint in the right manner and the executive of the union would give it due consideration.
