NOTES FROM RICCARTON
HORSES FOR ASHBURTON Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 2. The conditions were very unpleasant at Riccarton this morning. A lot of rain fell during the night, and there was light snow this morning As a result, the tracks were closed. Large fields seem assured for the Ashburton meeting next week, the opening of the South island spring circuit, Riccarton stables have 10 representatives in the John Grigg Stakes, and though most of them are maidens, there is material for a very interesting contest. Banshee is having a short rest before F. D Jones starts her on a preparation for spring engagements. She has been allowed to drop out of the John Grigg Stakes, in which Zorro should be a worthy representative of the stable. Banshee requires only one win to put her out of hack class, and she may be reserved for hack events at Trentham as part of her Oaks preparation. C. B. Dawson has Confidence Trick in good order for the maiden events at Ashburton. The Defaulter—Bird of Prey three-year-old was placed in his two recent starts at Riccarton, and he may go on to good form later in the season. He has just recovered from a slight cold. C. C. McCarthy is working a two-year-old who has attracted some attention lately. He is a well-grown chestnut colt by Neptune from Oragon, a half-sister to Gold Rod, from the Desert Gold family. Mr N. H. Barlow paid 1300 guineas for the colt, who is not being hurried, as he will not be required for early two-year-old racing.
