OBITUARY

MR J. P. CAGNEY The death on Tuesday of Mr John Patrick fagney. of 34 Wharfe street, Oamaru, has removed one of the best known business personalities of the town. Mr Cagnev was the son of the late Mr and Mrs John Cagney and for over 30 years he conducted the old-established and well-known stationery and book-sen-ing business in Thames street, which he took over from his father. Born i Oamaru, he was 'educated at St. Josepn s School, and lived all his life in Oamaru. He took no active part in public affairs, was of a somewhat retiring nature, but nevertheless he was widely known to a host of friends. He is survived by his widow, who is a daughter of the late Sergeant McGrath. Mr Donald Campbell Another well-known and highly-re-spected resident of Oamaru, Mr Donald Campbell, generally as “ Dugald, of 44 Reed street, died on Tuesday, at the age of 66 years. Mr Campbell was the son of Mr and Mrs D. Campbell, of Weston, where he was born. As a young man be was an enthusiastic member of the Oamaru Boxing Association, both his sons, Donald and Alan, taking an active part in boxing, Alan becoming th<s amateur heavy-weight champion of New Zealand. Mr Campbell was a foundation member of the North Otago Highland Pipe Band, and for many years was a piper, and later drum-major of the band. He was also a keen supporter of Rugby, and was a vice-president of the Athletic Football Club. For a period he followed the occupation of land salesman in the employ of the late Mr Walter Sumpter, and then for many years he was engaged in the motor car business as the representative of Dominion Motors. After a severe illness he retired seven years ago. He is survived by Mrs Campbell, four daughters (Mrs A. Smith. Oamaru: Mrs N. Lousley, Oamaru: Mrs L. Faid, Dunedin; and Mrs R. J. Firman, Oamaru), and two sons (Donald. Kurow. and Alan, Christchurch).
