THE CHALLENGES

QUESTION OF PRECEDENCE DATE FOR RETURN MATCH P A WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. Advice of challenges for the, Ranfurly Shield, provided Otago is still the holder after its match with Auckland, was received at a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-day. The challenging unions were South Canterbury, which sought September 10 or October 1; West Coast, North Otago, and Southland, the last-named asking that its return home-and-homc game on September 13 against Otago be a, shield fixture. Mr J. Prendeville asked if Southland should take precedence over the other three unions, and Mr S. S. Dean said the rules permitted a defending team to accept a return home-and-home fixture as a challenge match. If, however, there were any dispute over dates, the New Zealand Union could then review the position. The rules did not allow for any shield games after the end of September.
