DROVING IN GREEN ISLAND

Sir,—We read in your columns of the concern of Sawyers Bay residents over the dangers existing on their roads, but what do we find here in our Borough of Green Island? Stock every Wednesday afternoon is being driven through the borough just after school closing time for the youngest children. Some drovers no doubt comply with our borough’s bylaws, with a man in front of the mob and plenty of other assistance as well, but I am' referring to a certain drover who last Wednesday attempted to drive approximately 20 head of back-country cattle through the borough on his own. of course with disastrous results, as many residents can confirm. I have no doubt we will see in your columns in the near future where our brilliant and progressive council has had same prosecuted for breaking its by-laws. Personally, I think it a downright disgrace on the part of the owners of these cattle to ever allow them to have left the yards without at least six drovers with them. I suppose this kind of business will still continue as in the past until one or two children are killed, and then perhaps something reallv worthwhile will be done.—l am. etc.,' Resident. [This letter was referred to the town clerk at Green Island, who said that under an agreement with the drovers reached some time ago, they endeavoured to drive their cattle through the borough before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m. The Transport Department had been requested to keep a close check on drovers for the Borough Council,„,to see that the provisions of the by-law were observed. An official of the Transport Department said that it was investigating the case mentioned by the correspondent with a view to obviating any recurrence of the matter. —Ed 0.D.T.l
