THE PRICE OF TEA

Sir,—ln the Daily Times of August 18 a letter appears from E. A. S in which is stated that 8 pice equal 1 rupee, equal Is 4d. The Indian coinage consists of the following:—l2 pies, 1 anna; 4 pice, 1 anna; 16 annas, 1 rupee. The rupee varies in value according to the rate of exchange, but as an anna is treated as. Id. Is 4d is a convenient nominal value It seems to me absurd to compare ’’ cost of living ” in various countries unless the whole circumstances are taken into consideration. The natives of India can actually purchase articles of food for• a “ pie.” How can we imagine being able to purchase anything for a coin of the value of one-third of a farthing?—l am, etc.. H. A. S.
