“MOST APPROPRIATE”

FIRST CHURCH DESIGN CENTENNIAL POSTAGE STAMP It would be most appropriate Jf .the First Church design were used for one of the Otago centennial postage stamps, said the Rev. R. S. Watson,, moderator of the Presbytery of Dunedin, yesterday, when invited to comment on the desirability of the use of a postage stamp with religious significance. Because one of the designs submitted for the centennial stamps is not entirely suitaßle for printing, the First Church design, which was formerly rejected, is now being engraved for further consideration. It would be most fitting if one of the Otago centennial stamps bore religious significance or reference to the

church, Mr Watson said, because the Church of Scotland' had been such a considerable influence in the settlement of Otago. While, . naturally, Presbyterians would wholeheartedly commend the adoption of the design, members of other denominations, at a recent meeting of the Otago branch of the National Council of Churches, had also warmly supported the suggestion. “ Members of all churches appreciate very much the action of Mr P. G. Connolly, M.P., in bringing to the notice of the Postmaster-general, Mr Hacket't, the appropriateness of including First Church in the designs submitted for the Otago centennial stamps,” Mr Watson added.
