ADOPTION OF LAMBS
A stubborn ewe can sometimes be induced to adopt a foster lamb by the shepherd bringing a dog up to the fostering pen. Maternal instinct will come into play, and the ewe will usually stamp at the dog and nuzzle the lamb, as if to assure it that she will do her best to protect it. This seems to break down any dislike the ewe may entertain for the foster, and is often most useful in getting an obstinate ewe to take a strange lamb. Inhuman methods, such as hitting the ewe over the nose until it bleeds cannot be too strongly condemned. The most stubborn ewe will usually' adopt a lamb if some oil of anise is rubbed on her nose and on the poll of the lamb. This essence is peculiarly attractive to animals and is worth trying in extreme cases. One drop on each nostril of the ewe and on the poll of the lamb are all that is required. Onion, garlic and fennel are sometimes used in lieu of oil of anise.
