GOLDEN WEDDING

MR AND MRS W, D. McCARTHY

Mr and Mrs W D. McCarthy, of 95 Musselburgh Rise, entertained relatives and friends at their home last Monday, the occasion being the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding. After spending the first nine years, of their married life in Invercargill. Mr and Mrs McCarthy returned to Dunedin and built their present home. Well known in golfing circles Mr and Mrs McCarthy have both been elected life members of the St. Clair Golf Club. Mrs McCarthy represented the South Island some years ago in the only men versus women match ever' to be played in New Zealand. She was then on a handicap of four, which she maintained for 12 years. She won the Otago Provincial Championship in 1927, and was known before the war as an ardent competitor at New Zealand championships She continues to play in club matches. Mr McCarthy has once been champion of the St. Clair Club, and has been the winner of the Dewar Cup He held office as president for one year, and has been a member of the committee for 15 years Mr and Mrs McCarthy have one son. Colonel D. D. McCarthy, who is inspector of hospitals for the province of Buganda, Uganda, and one daughter, Mrs G. A. Douglas, of Dunedin, who is well known for her work with the Dunedin Repertory Society. During jhe afternoon, when golfing friends were entertained, Lady Sidey presented Mrs McCarthy with an overnight bag and a bouquet on behalf of the lady members of the St. Clair Golf Club
