COASTAL CARGOES
EXCESSIVE DELAYS CONTROL OF SHIPPING BLAMED Referring to excessive delays in the receipt of inward cargo and the despatch of manufactured and primary goods from Dunedin, Mr V. S. Jacobs remarked at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce last night that the annual report had stated that an improvement in the position could only be effected by a quicker turn-round of ships, Mr Jacobs said he had been informed by shippers in Wellington that the principal cause of the coastal shipping delays “ lay at the door of the Shipping Controller.” If advance advice of shipping movements were available, it was contended that there would be no trouble, said Mr Jacobs. As an example of how shipping was controlled, Mr Jacobs mentioned that a ship, bound for Dunedin, had been diverted to Nelson “to bring secondgrade apples to Otago, when our beautiful Otago apples were being sent to cool stores in Southland.” The president, Mr A. C. Stephens, said that control of shipping had been lifted in Australia and a new arrangement instituted. Perhaps the details of this new arrangement could' be ascertained with a view to recommending that such a system be introduced in New Zealand.
