OPINION ON THE ISLAND
PROPOSAL APPROVED “In more than 40 years Canberra has had only one use for Norfolk Island and its 1000 people—its administratorship is a handy, cushy job into which retiring politicians to whom the presiding Government feels under some sort of obligation may be pitchforked,”* says the Pacific Jslanas Monthly in an editorial comment on the suggestion that Norfolk Island should come under New Zealand sovereignty. “If it were attached to New Zealand, only 500 miles away, it could sell in a good and reliable market
every orange, banana, passion fruit, potato, or tomato it could produce,” says the article. “ There is literally no market for Norfolk’s produce now." With its soft and kindly climate the island would be a fine resort for holidaymakers, given transport, the article adds. Australia in 40 years had done practically nothing to develop thal traffic. Perhaps New Zealand would have more imagination.
