“HEARTLESS FRAUD”

MONEY OBTAINED FROM GIRL P.A. WELLINGTON. Aug. 5. Because he wanted to ensure repayment by the prisoner of money secured from a Nelson girl by “ a heartless fraud,” the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, in the Supreme Court to-day admitted Thomas Herbert McKay, aged 31, a pastrycook, to probation for four years, a condition being he repay £337 10s at the rate of 30s a week. Mr L. A. Creswell, who appeared for the prisoner, said the offences resulted from the break-up of the prisoner’s marriage, his wife having gone off with another man. After borrowing small sums from a Nelson girl, to whom he became engaged while still married, the prisoner had got from her £IOO and then another £2OO. saying he was going into business.
