SOUTHLAND REFEREES CANTERBURY UNION’S DISCUSSION P.A CHRISTCHURCH,’Aug. 5. The Southland Rugby Unions complaint that remarks made at a recent meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union when the appointment of outside referees for Ranfurly Shield matches was discussed, cast a reflection on the integrity of Southland referees, came before a meeting of the Canterbury Union this evening. “The subject has been argued in connection with Ranfurly Shield matches for many years,” said Mr J. N. Clarke/ “ We were talking on a matter of policy and I defy anyone to say that I criticised Southland or any other referees. From the reaction in Southland the cap evidently fitted, but I will not withdraw any of my remarks.” , ~ , ~ Mr R. R. Masters, who presided, said that the reply should be made that the union had been discussing a problem in general and no criticism of Southland referees was intended. It was agreed to send Mr Clarke’s explanation to the Southland Union.
