NOTES FROM RICCARTON

ROMAN SON AMISS Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. Though Soneri was lame after her race in the Winter Cup, she has not broken down. The trouble, which is in the near fore leg, is due to a knock she received before she came to Riccarton. She will go north to-night and will have a rest, but it is hoped she will be all right soon, for weight-for-ages races, to which she may be restricted in future. Montello d’Oro stifled one of the obstacles in the Trial Hurdles on Saturday and he was decidedly sore this morning Appeasement was very sore after his race in the Grand National Steeplechase, while Turf Topic, in the same stable, was galloped on in the Trial Hurdles. Soneri set a weight-carrying record when she won the Winter Cup under 11.4. Toxeuma had 11.5 when he was successful, but the minimum then was 9.0, against 8.0 now. Royal Writ is here yet, and it is hoped he may be able to contest the Lincoln Steeplechase next week. It is expected that T, J. Boyle will ride Boolamskee in the Grand National Hurdles, while R. J. Hawes will be on Matapan, in addition to handling Fairyhouse in the Beaufort Steeplechase. The steeplechaser, Roman Son, has gone wrong in a ligament and he will have a long spell before being tried again next year. Hunting Mac, Ernada, and Hippodrome arrived from the north on Saturday. There was some jumping at Riccarton this morning. Spirillum and The Dude went well over four hurdles. Hunting Mac gave a good display over eight flights. Hippodrome set out with him, but was outpaced and he was pulled up after four hurdles.
