TOTALISATOR FIGURES

The attendance at Riccarton on Saturday was reported to be over 25,000, and was a record. The totalisator handled the sum of £173,368 10s, compared with £168,533 10s last year.

was no alteration in the order, but across the bend Boolamskee and Sphere were beginning to move up, with Desert Trek still well back. With two furlongs to run, Boolamskee hit the front from Sphere and King’s Ace, with Desert Trek beginning to thread his way through the field. Half a furlong from home Boolamskee looked like winning easily, and his rider appeared to allow him to ease up, and with a final swoop Desert Trek got within a neck of the Baffles gelding. Sphere finished third ahead of Periwig and King’s Ace. Then came Glad Fox and Battle Chief. Paparua Handicap The’haze had lifted when the Paparua Handicap was run, and the big field lined up in perfect conditipns. Kashmiri, Rival Chase, Dash o’ Dink, and Graeme were slow to begin. Whitley, Julius Caesar, Legal Rose, .and John o’ London began well, and as the field swept past the six, John o’ London took over the running, and was followed by Whitley, Legal Rose. Lorna Leigh, Julius Caesar, Finalist, Cipher, Playtos, and Bath Slipper. As they galloped across the bottom bend, there was little alteration except that Frances was coming into the picture. John o’ London was the first to straighten up for home from Whitley and Julius Caesar, with Lorna Leigh moving up fast on the rails. A furlong from home, Lorna Leigh hit the front, and galloped home a decisive winner from Julius Caesar, with Frances finishing well for third. Then came John o’ London, Whitley, Dash o’ Dink, and Kirkella. Grand National Steeplechase The full field went to the post for the Grand National Steeplechase, for which Page’s Raid was made a good favourite on both machines. Surpeen and Filibeg were the first to break the line, bu t t Filibeg slurred the carriage paddock' brush nad Surpeen took up the running from Tamerlane, Red Glare, Filibeg, Page’s Raid and Town Survey. Abbey Lu crashed at the first of the stand double. Racing down to Cutts, Red Glare went past Surpeen, and these two were followed into the bpek stretch by Tamerlane, Spirillum and Page’s Raid. Tamerlane went out at the kennels double. Surpeen cleared the sod wall near the five furlongs in brilliant style to take the lead again, and Page’s Raid went up to third. The stand double brought Page’s Raid down. As they ran to Cutts for the last time, the order was Surpeen, Red Glare, Spirillum, Roman Ned and Spanish Main, with Appeasement and Filibeg well back. Red Glare began to drift and Spanish Main went up to second place to follow Surpeen over the post and rails near the mile post, then came Spirillum. From that stage, Surpeen, cleverly ridden, never looked in danger of defeat, and the Surveyor gelding came home full of running to win from Spanish Main. Town Survey got up for third, and was followed by Spirillum and Red Glare. Trial Hurdles The Crofter and John Gay lost their riders at the first fence in the Trial Hurdles, and Fading Light was followed past the post the first time by Kosciusko, Ruling Moment and Night Fighter. Racing down to the mile post, Ruling Moment was out in front from Night Fighter, Lord Roland, Fading Light, Kosciusko and Flying Ace, with Duality still well back in the field. Lord Roland went up to second place as they came across the bend, but he dropped out at the home turn, and Ruling Moment was followed into the
