OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

Soneri Scores Attractively in Winter Cup SURPEEN’S GRAND NATIONAL Special Reporter CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 3 The Grand National nleeting was opened in perfect weather before a record attendance. . The track provided splendid going, but for the earlier races a portion of the course was blanketed in a fairly heavy haze, which made it difficult to pick up the runners. Soneri won the Winter Cup in brilliant fashion. She drew 23 at the barrier and was a bit fidgety, but she got out well and was fourth into the straight. She suffered a slight check when trying to get through on the inside, about a furlong and a-half from home, but she was taken to the outside and wore Howe down in the run to the judge. It was the performance of a real champion. The Bulandshar mare was very sore on returning to the birdcage. Surpeen gave a splendid exhibition of jumping to win the Grand National Steeplechase, crossing obstacle after obstacle in spectacular style. He is the first tubed horse to win the race. Horses from Wingatui had their share of success. Lorna Leigh won the Paparua Handicap, Desert Trek finished second in the Jumpers’ Flat, Night Fighter second in the Trial Hurdles, Frances third in the Paparua Handicap, and Special Flight third in the Avonhead Handicap.

The carded field went to the post in the Enfield Steeplechase, and Fairyhouse gave a brilliant exhibition of jumping to win after leading over the last tw.o miles. Bravura, Paladeo and Cloister were.the first to show out, but running across the bottom Fairyhouse went to the front, followed by Hughsotis, Bravura Cloister and Ballyaggan. This was the order through the straight, and Cloister came down at the stand jump. As they turned into the back, Fairyhouse was clear of Bravura, and they were followed by Ballyaggan, Waihopai, Hughsotis and Edward. Troytown lost his rider. Across the bend Fairyhouse and Bravura cleared out from the field, and Paladeo dropped his rider. Into the straight the order was Fairyhouse, Bravura, Ballyaggan, Edward and Hughsotis. Fairyhouse never looked like being headed and went on for an easy win from Bravura, with a wide break to Ballyaggan. Edward was fourth. Waihopai was eliminated at the Kennels double, where Real Night refused. Cashmere Plate The light was very bad as the field lined up. the haze having thickened, and the horses took a phantom form. When they reached the false rail those most prominent were Confidence Trick, Magnaform, Coral Arc, Gold Medallion, Liebestraum and Broie. Carry On and Count Minerva, two of the early leaders, had disappeared. With a furlong to run, Magnaform and Coral Arc drew away and Magnaform won wall, with Confidence Trick in third place, followed by Liebestraum, Gold Medallion, Beaugard, All’s Fair. Detract and Lodestar. Beau Bijou was left at the start. , . Jumpers Flat - The early leaders in the Jumpers Flat were Bay Robe, King’s Ace, Periwig, and Royal Flash, but _as they turned into the back, Glad Fox went up fast to take the lead, followed by Royal Flash, Bay Robe, Periwig, King s' Ace, Matapan, and Boolamskee. As they passed the six furlong post, there

straight by Night Fighter, Montello d’Oro, Kosciusko, Flying Ace and Duality. The last-named came with a great .mn on the and won going away from Night Fighter, with Ruling Moment third. Then in order came Flying Ace, Montello d’Oro. Aldis Lamp and Kosciusko. Winter Cup Lexia lost several lengths at the start of the Winter Cup and Blanket, Velvet Slipper, Hakim, and Matador began slowly. Night Blush, Pensacola, Clyde Bridge, and Howe were the first to begin, and were followed out by Verdant, Detain, Good Cast, Soneri, and Miss Medley. Riverview showed a burst of speed to rush up to Pensacola, Night Blush, and Clyde Bridge at the end of a furlong. Behind these four came Howe, Detain, Verdant, and Soneri. With four furlongs to run Clyde Bridge went to the front and led into the straight, followed by Howe, Verdant, Pensacola, Soneri, Detain* and Miss Medley. Pensacola dropped out, and a furlong from •home Howe and Soneri headed off Clyde Bridge, and L. J. Ellis and W. J. Broughton sat down on their mounts to stage a thrilling finish, in which the brilliant top-weight just got there Findon put in fine work in the concluding stages to get third, and then came Miss Medley, Clyde Bridge, Detain, Bridge Acre. Sahib, Longsword, Verdant, Sumra, Riverview, and Night Blush, \ Avonhead Handicap i Robingay, Young John, Fort Silver. Vanity King, Beechwood, and Ganjah all began well in the Avonhead Handicap, while Polka, Wandering Minstrel. Fine Night, and Quadrille were .slow to move. When the field settled down Young John and Fort Silver showed the way to Vanity King and Beechw'ood, who were followed by Queen’s General, Sandy’s Pride, Royal Robe, Special Flight, and Deficiency. »Young John and Beechwood were the first to turn for home from Fort Silver, Queen s General, Royal Robe, and Ganjah. With a furlong to go, Deficiency and Beechwood were clear from Special Flight and Ganjah, and in a fine race home Beechwood just got there from Deficiency, with Special Flight right up with them.
