DEMOCRACY FAVOURED
CONSTITUTION FOR BURMA CLOSE ASSOCIATION WITH BRITAIN Rec. 10.30 p.m- LONDON, June 11., “ Our guiding principle will be that the Constitution must provide a democratic system of Government framed to meet our national genius,” declared Thakin Mya, president of the Burmese Socialist Party, who was elected chairman of the Burmese Constituent Assembly at its opening session yesterday. He added, according to the Rangoon correspondent of The Times: “We must also study the Constitutions of other democratic -countries, and particularly those that have stood the test of time and guided nations to greatness.” The correspondent says it is expected that on the third or fourth day of the session a resolution will, be moved proclaiming Burma a sovereign independent republic. Some educated and experienced Burmans, he adds, would like Burma to remain in the Empire, if only for a few years, but the young Nationalist leaders have been shouting for complete independence too long to turn back now, though there are those who .would like to do so. In any case, there are grounds for believing that the Burmese leaders favour a fairly close association with Britain, especially as their finances are in such a deplorable condition.
