AMERICAN APPROVAL

UNITED STATES OF EUROPE CLOSE CO-OPERATION ADVISED Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON, June 10. The Secretary' of State, Mr George Marshall, has informed Congress that he aoroves the United States of Europe within the framework of the. United Nations. Mr Marshall sent a letter to Senator Vanden'oerg (Republican, Michigan) in response to a request for his views on a resolution thereon submitted to Congress. Mr Marshall’s letter said he was deeply sympathetic towards the general objective of the resolution, which aimed at encouraging the peoples of Europe to co-operate more closely for their common good, and particularly to seek economic recovery of Europe as a whole. Mr Marshall said: “Of course, the United States wants a Europe which is not divided against itself; a better Europe than the one it replaces. Only as we inspire the hope of that can we expect men to endure what must be endured and make the great efforts which must be made if wars are to be avoided and civilisation is to survive, but we should make it clear that it is not our purpose to impose any particular form of political or economic association. The future organisation of Europe must be determined by the peoples of Europe.”
