EUROPEAN MIGRANTS

SETTLEMENT IN TASMANIA WORK ON HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME Rec. 9 p.m. CANBERRA, June 11. About 2000 immigrants will be admitted to Tasmania under new arrangements decided by Minister of Immigration, Mr A. A. Calwell, and the Tasmanian Premier. Mr R. Cosgrove. The scheme has not hitherto applied as part of the Australian immigration policy. When Mr Calwell goes abroad this month he will seek 2000 Polish or Northern European immigrants for work on the Tasmanian hydro-electric scheme. They will be required to work two years on the project and if they break that agreement they will be returned to Europe. The Governments also reserve the right to deport men who secure passages to Australia by false pretence? or who do not measure up to trade standard.
