WOOLLEN GOODS
SHORTAGES MORE ACUTE
RETAILERS’ SHARP COMMENT
P A. WELLINGTON, June 3. The shortage of all types of New Zealand-made woollen goods goes from bad to worse. Thousands of women are going from shop to shop in a vain effort to obtain winter clothing for their families and themselves. This was stated to-day by the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation when asked whether any improvement in deliveries from local woollen mills had beeome apparent during the last 10 federation attributed the shortage to the continued delay by the Government either to grant a subsidy to manufacturers or to allow an increase in price to offset the rise in price of wool at the recent sales. The embarrassment of the public was acute, but nothing compared with the lack of consideration for mothers of young children and expectant mothers, who, it was stated, were spending their time in visiting shop after shop in a futile search. “The Government's delay in coming to a decision now amounts to a public scandal,’’ said the federation.
